New Library: The final phase of the original plan for ASMS is to provide a library for the hard working students who attend. In any school, the library should be the hub of the academic program and should offer students and faculty a wide range of programs and resources. The current library size for 300 students is 1720 sq ft. Students have limited availability to computers with computer stations being housed in areas that were storage rooms. We have been in the process of upgrading the book collection but are running out of stack space. Students must be able to study in areas that are rich in material and resources. Because ASMS is a residential 42,000 sq ft renovation provides a new library, study carrels, media center, and computer areas, plus: enhances the security of the campus, provides handicapped access to all areas of this facility, isolates the waiting area in the health office, expands the exercise facility, and separates the functions of the Activity center: the game room, student lounge and TV area. Project costs are $5.4 million.
Thus far, $2,340,000 has been pledged or received from Alabama Power, Michelin, Dupont, Exxon, Shell, AmSouth, SouthTrust, J L Bedsole Fdn, Sybil Smith Trust, Daniel Foundation, Energen, Brasfield & Gorrie, Moorer Foundation, ALFA, White Smith Land, Bedsole Medical, and Regions.
Chemistry Lab Upgrade: The Chemistry Lab has received a pledge of $100,000 from Degussa Corp to upgrade its lab facility. The pledge is a five year pledge and ASMS hopes to add to it over the next five years and expand the science facilities. This project is in its early stage of development.
Bleachers and a treadmill are being added to athletics due to a gift from Lowe’s Tool Box. This should add to our athletic program.
ID System:The Parent Association donated $3600 to purchase an ID System which included a camera, backdrop, and ID card printer to make ID’s for the students. The funds were raised through Parent events such as the used booksale and silent auction; as well as from Parent dues.
