What have you learned?

Was the experience what you expected? You have probably grown in ways that you don’t even realize. The experience is definitely the reward.

Now we want to assess your language progress, which is only one aspect of the immersion experience. Please be sure to take the same placement test which you took at the beginning of this adventure again as soon as you get back. You can do this from home or when you first get to school, please tell your teacher when you have done it. This result together with classroom observation upon your return and a face to face discussion in the office will determined the actual language credit you will have earned. There is faculty obligation to grant any credit, so student initiative is crucial.

Here is an overview of what academic credits CAN be earned and how:

0.25-0.5 CU for the equivalent of passing the fall term intermediate German course
This grade is awarded no later than before mid-term grades of the next term and essentially certifies that while you did not learn the same exact things that were covered in this class at ASMS, you made appropriate progress in your language skills and actively participated to a certain degree in your learning.

0.25-0.5 CU for passing the “program abroad: Germany” elective
This grade is awarded when all parts are completed, at student discretion:
  1. Get an account of your experience published in your home or local paper or present a media presentation to a group outside of ASMS. Most of the following topics should be addressed:
    • Personal observations and thoughts about:
      1. the country of Germany
      2. German school, everyday life for a high school student, teachers, the school system
      3. German family life, the people, the quirks, the differences, the typical patterns
    • Compare Germany and US, your home town and Münster.
    • Compare your expectations to what actually happened.
    • Compare how you feel about the experience now to how you felt about it before or even when you first got there.
      • Has it had an influence on you?
      • What was expected, unexpected?
      • What was best, worst?
      • What is best coming back, what do you miss from over there?
      • What will you do with your experience?
  2. Make a good and personalized presentation about your trip including pictures and items to classes in session and for the entire ASMS community, if possible.
  3. Arrange to have your insights integrated on our short visits abroad website.
Up to 1.0 CU in addition to your initial elective credit (max. total elective credit 1.5 CU)

This credit is granted just prior to graduation upon request. You earn this credit through your commitment to make the most of all German offerings at ASMS and it testifies to your high level skills which in turn qualify you for German Honor Society and for taking the AP test. Through consistent motivation, continued effort, uninterrupted enrollment and participation in extracurricular activities you have really honored the privilege of being selected and have earned highest credits possible.
