Dr. Petty started out in engineering for two years at Wayne State University in Detroit before switching to Chemistry. After graduating with his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, he entered graduate school at the University of Michigan where he earned his Masters (1977) and Ph.D. (1981) in Inorganic Chemistry. While there he became a member of the Phi Lambda Upsilon Honor Society. Following two years of post-doctoral research at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and one year teaching at the University of Cincinnati, he accepted a job as an assistant professor of chemistry at Longwood College in Virginia where he taught for six years before coming to the Alabama School of Math and Science. His last summer in Virginia was spent at NASA's Langley Research Center in Norfolk, VA working on research related to the Aero-Space Plane.
