Ecological Monitoring of an Estuary

These projects are related to the ecology of D'Olive Bay, Daphne, Baldwin County, AL.

D'Olive Bay is a small estuarine bay which comprises the northeastern corner of Mobile Bay, in an area of transitional to fresh marsh. Fresh water from the Tensaw River has a very strong influence on the area.

D'Olive Bay is subject to a complexity of natural and manmade influences, such as tides, fresh water inflow, sedimentation and erosion, non-point-source pollution, and alteration of its natural hydrology due to the construction of roads and causeways. The Bay is the primary basin which receives sedimentation and runoff from Daphne, AL, the largest city in Baldwin County.

The current project involves investigations of the Bay and its immediate watershed, including water quality, sedimentation, and vegetation. Data is collected using a wide variety of standardized techniques, and is stored and analyzed using a Geographic Information System.
