Course Schedule:  April 1-7, 2002. Office hours by appointment.
Course Description and Goals:

This special project will study the birds and natural landscapes of the northern Gulf Coast from the Florida panhandle to southern Louisiana. Along the way we will sample the extraordinary and diverse human cultures of the area.

The northern Gulf Coast is one of the most important conservation areas in the United States, and affords incomparable opportunities to see a large variety of birds, mammals, and habitats on a relatively short and inexpensive trip. Students will have an opportunity to view a variety of beautiful natural areas and will be given a solid initiation for a potential lifetime interest in birds.

Textbooks:

Peterson, R. T. 191980. A Field Guide to the Birds of Eastern and Central North America. Peterson Field Guide Series. Houghton Mifflin Co., NY, NY, together with numerous field guides, manuals and selected readings as provided by the instructor.

Quammen, David. 1996. The Song of the Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinctions. Scribner, New York.

Required Materials: Each student will keep a field journal and bird list. The field journal will be a hard-backed, ruled notebook with pages that are not perforated to tear out. A marble-backed composition book is good. The bird list will be kept in the field journal.
Final Product: We will compile a coursebook using journal selections and bird lists, along with photos and other keepsakes of the trip. This Coursebook will be posted as a web site.
