The purpose of the Office of the Development is to raise funds to
benefit and impact the studentsı experience at the Alabama School of
Mathematics and Science. Each year, the money raised represents giving from
alumni, friends, business partners, and parents, helping generations of
students reap the benefits of an ASMS education.
Our students and alumni appreciate the fact that people are willing to
donate funding to support their school. They are the beneficiaries of your
support. Although funding from the state of Alabama covers operational
costs, we rely on outside donations to pay for major building renovations
and repairs as well as enhancements to the academic program, such as
additional supplies and equipment for the biology department (2005-2006) and
supplementing the choirıs trip to Carnegie Hall (spring 2005). Outside
donations also helped revamp the pool filtration system, repaint the pool,
and purchase a new 14-passenger van equipped for handicapped accessibility.
Moreover, the ASMS logo was painted on the bottom of the pool courtesy of
the 2005-2006 Parentıs Association.
To be honest, the past two fundraising years were irregular, and I attribute
this to the devastating hurricanes that have hit the Gulf Coast. Because of
this, we find ourselves temporarily with dwindling unrestricted resources
from the community. As many of you already know, the ASMS campus was
originally the site of Dauphin Way Baptist Church, a beautiful location in
Mobileıs historic district. As much as we enjoy the privilege of our
location, we are constantly faced with the need to repair, paint, and
renovate existing structures.
In 2005, your donations funded the following improvements: the repair of
leaks in the geothermal heating/cooling system, long-overdue ceiling repairs
in the cafeteria kitchen, the addition of two below-ground pumps that
prevent the first floor of the Administration building from flooding, and
repair of the boiler that supplies hot water to the girls dorm. In addition,
there is a constant need to replace room air-conditioners in the dorms. Last
year alone, the Foundation purchased 20 new units for the dorms. Lastly,
each year the Foundation has underwritten the replacement of windows (one
floor at a time) in the girlıs dormitory and the science building.
Unfortunately, the original windows have rotted and are not covered under
any type of warranty.
One major project that restricted giving will go toward is the renovation of
the library and student activity center. Because construction costs are
rapidly escalating each year, it is imperative for us to break ground. When
the renovations are complete, students will finally have a library worthy of
their studies and a bigger activity center where they can unwind. We are
also confident that these renovations will aid in the recruitment of top
students.
It is my hope that you sincerely consider making a contribution to ASMS. You
can feel assured that your donations have made a difference and will
continue to make a difference in the lives of each of our students. And, in
turn, these ASMS graduates will reciprocate your generosity as the future
leaders of Alabama.
In fact, 63 percent of our 2005 graduates have elected to attend college in
Alabama. Across the board the 2005 graduating class set school records. Of
the 84 graduates, 88 percent were offered $11.8 million in scholarships. We
had six National Merit Finalists, three National Achievement Finalists, one
National Merit Special Scholarship recipient, one National Merit Special
Corporate Scholarship recipient, and four ROTC scholarship recipients. We
are also pleased that this year's incoming class is one of the strongest on
record. I cannot wait to witness and be a part of their accomplishments.
The following links list those who have been generous during the 2004-2005
fiscal year. We wish to thank each of you for your continued support of the
hardworking students of ASMS. To make a donation, please call 251-441-2171
or send a check to ASMS.
