Research: Faculty and staff members have received countless research grants. Most recently the Physics Department has earned MIT-Lemelson and Toyota Tapestry grants; the Biology Department has earned a Toyota Tapestry grant; the Art Department earned Community Foundation grants; and the school earned a $100,000 Department of Education G5 Technology grant, as well as grants from NASA, the National Science Foundation, EPSCoRs, the Sloan Foundation, and the GTE Growth Initiatives for Teachers Fellowship Program, among many.

Literary Magazine: Each year students publish the "Oculus," a literary magazine that features poems, short stories, and artwork.

Student Life

Van Runs: Nearly every afternoon a van run is made to the mall, Wal-Mart, or nearby restaurants.

Mobile: The city of Mobile is known for its seafood, Mardi Gras, oak trees, and azaleas. ASMS is conveniently located within walking distance of downtown and is minutes away from Interstate 10 and Interstate 65. Mobile is also home to the NFL's Senior Bowl, the International Festival, Bay Fest, The U.S.S. Alabama Memorial Park, Gulf Coast Exploreum, Dauphin Island Sea Lab, African-American Heritage Trail, Five Rivers Delta Safaris, Mobile Carnival Museum, Fort Conde Museum, Bay Bears minor league baseball team, and other attractions available to students. Campus Amenities: swimming pool; tennis courts; art studio; two sound-proof piano practice rooms; indoor walking track; weight room; beach volleyball court; practice soccer field; exercise room with elliptical machines, stationary bikes, and treadmills; gym; bowling ally; game room with billiards, table tennis, air hockey, and a flat-panel TV for gaming; coffee house; and a TV room (each dorm floor also has a flat-panel TV and a DVD player).

Volunteering: Each year ASMS students log 4,500 hours volunteering. Whether it's tutoring elementary students, helping with food drives, building Habitat for Humanity homes, rescuing animals, giving blood, or feeding the homeless, it's clear that ASMS students understand the importance of giving back to their community. The culture of volunteerism, so deeply ingrained at ASMS, is rooted in a concerted effort by the school to teach students that helping others is an important character trait in many successful leaders. In fact, many students volunteer on a weekly or monthly basis and most become quite passionate about their work.

Summer Program

AIMS: The Adventures In Math and Science summer program is an academically oriented camp offered each June and open to all rising 7th through 10th graders. Click here for more.

Costs: Residential camp is $375 per week and is all-inclusive; day camp is $260 and includes lunch.
