DIRECTOR OF STUDENT AFFAIRS
Barbara Ensminger NCC, LPC

Welcome to the Department of Student Affairs. As Director my focus is facilitating student needs outside the classroom The department goal and my personal goal are one in the same, to ensure a safe, clean, nurturing environment for each resident to grow at their own pace. Keeping parents informed and involved is of primary importance. Staff and parents work in partnership to provide information to ensure success for all residents.

The Student Affairs staff includes the Residential Life Coordinator, counselors (academic/college as well as personal), hall advisors, resident assistants, a nurse and van drivers working together to provide a caring, fun environment that fosters growth and independence for the two or three years that students reside at ASMS. The staff meets once a week to make sure that activities are planned, rules are in place, and students are progressing. If there are problems, referrals are made to the proper personnel. Counselors and the nurse are on call twenty-four hours a day seven days a week while students are in residence.

Counselors provide emotional support and some in-depth counseling for ASMS residents. The nurse has liaison with area hospitals and doctors to help manage residents’ health care that cannot be handled in the ASMS health office. The health clinic is open from 7am until 3pm Monday through Friday.

There is a full-time hall advisor and a part-time resident assistant on every floor (about 34 students). Hall advisors and resident assistants coordinate the daily activities of the floor, plan social activities, enforce rules, and provide support and guidance for all students. Residential life personnel are chosen for their demonstrated interest in young people.

On a personal note I have had the pleasure of working with teenagers in a professional setting for over 30 years. My undergraduate degrees are in psychology and special education from the University of Utah. My graduate degrees are in counseling and guidance and student personnel services from Northwestern in Louisiana.

ASMS has been my “work home” since the school opened in 1991. The one thing I can count on as Director of Student Affairs is that my job is never boring. I am available for any and all questions or concerns (251) 441-2145.
