Beginning of an Eclipse Emily Taylor

we burn holes in our retinas
to catch a fleeting glimpse
of the darkness in the soul
of the stark midday eclipse

we do not bend or shy from
the piercing of Sol's rays
but the sighs that fill the atmosphere
are pain's unguarded praise

soreness in the youngest eye
comes from the brightest dark
and form the orb of heaven's gate
fades noontime's golden spark
