Alum, Benji Sawyer ’97, has been busy since graduating from ASMS. After graduating from the University of Memphis with a M.S. in Engineering Technology, he and his father started Sawyer Solutions LLC, in Birmingham, Ala.

“Sawyer Solutions is an information technology company that delivers the highest level of expertise in I.T., compliance and cyber security services for businesses. We listen to your needs, customize your solutions and ensure you have timely, exceptional customer service tailored to fit your business.”

Since starting the Sawyer Solutions, Sawyer has completed the Goldman-Sachs 10,000 Small Business program in 2018, with fellow ASMS alum Abe Harper and won 2 Small Business of the Year awards!

“My company won the Greater Shelby Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year award for our size category and we won the Silver (second place) award for Small Business of the Year in Alabama from the Alabama Chamber of Commerce Association in our size category” Sawyer says.

The Greater Shelby Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year awards celebrated the impact that small businesses have on the local communities. Many businesses were nominated and only 5 received awards. The Small Business of the Year in Alabama award is an annual awards program presented by the Partnership of the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama and the Business council of Alabama, who recognize the very best in Alabama small business.

Not only has Sawyer’s company been recognized for their achievements, but he, as a business owner, has been recognized as well.

“I am a part of the 2019 class of Leadership Shelby and just finished up a term as chair of the Small Business Work-group for the Greater Shelby Chamber of Commerce,” Sawyer says.

Sawyer accredits ASMS for helping him find his people, which in turn, helped him become the accredited business owner he is today.

“ASMS gave me an amazing education and personal opportunities and wonderful friendships,” Sawyer says. “I ended up rooming with one of my friends from there in college and after college until I got married. Living in a tightly confined area with a bunch of other people that were so much like me, was such a unique and formative experience. [ASMS] gave me the first chance to be the me that I wanted to be.”
