ASMS Hosts Mobile Baldwin County Chess League Tournament

By January 17, 2019 One Comment

Last Thursday, January 10, 2019, ASMS had the pleasure of hosting the final Mobile-Baldwin County Chess League Tournament. Around 180 students from over 20 schools from Mobile and Baldwin counties were represented in the tournament. The chess league has been in existence for 49 years and is the most active league in Alabama.

The tournament kicked off with a pep rally hosted by the ASMS cheerleaders and the ASMS band.

“An experience you can only find at ASMS is our annual chess pep rally,” says Javia Warner ASMS Cheerleader. “It is really important to our chess team members. The cheerleaders and students really love to cheer on our teams.”

ASMS has three chess teams sponsored by ASMS instructors Kevin Dolbeare and Orren Kickliter (pictured left).

“ASMS had a very strong showing this year,” says Dolbeare. “The varsity team stumbled in the beginning of the year, but Nic Cockrell, ASMS junior, still won the bestplayer award for Mobile and Baldwin counties. The junior varsity team came in third place overall.”

ASMS Varsity chess team captain Nic Cockrell (pictured right) won the top player award for the second year in a row.

“Chess has always been a big part in my life and I’m glad ASMS has given me the opportunity to compete on a team and win the Paul Morphy (top player) award for the second year in a row,” says Cockrell.

Dawson Wilcox, ASMS junior, new to chess, ranked high for the junior varsity team.

“This was my first year ever playing chess,” says Wilcox. “The Chess team has given me the opportunity to make myself better as a player and experience new things. I am ranked second on the JV team (pictured below) and we won 3rd place. The chess team has given me a lot of opportunities and new experiences I wouldn’t have experienced otherwise.”

    Hell-o

Did not know ASMS had such developed and successful chess teams. Congratulations! I am sending you this comment to let you know of a Chess Tournament here in Mobile. It’s The Mobile Open. The 2nd annual is October 26, 2019. It includes a rated Open section and two unrated Scholastic sections. Entry fee for the Open is $30 and the Scholastics are $15. I am sure some of your strongest players would enjoy the Open section. We are expecting to have 12 to 16 players with possible 3 players with ratings over 1900. It would be a great test. USCF membership is required for the Open Section. In the Scholastic section there will be players from a rating of 600-1100 at least. I can send a copy of the flyer with more details if you are interested. Have a great chess season.
