ASMS Student Assists in D.C. as Senate Page

By February 14, 2019 No Comments

Recently ASMS junior, Benjamin Stimpson, returned from spending two terms in Washington D.C. as a Senate page. As a Senate page, he was responsible for setting up and taking down senators’ desks for speeches, running important documents through the capitol complex, setting the Senate chamber up every day before it went into session, and helping the Senate cloakrooms with whatever they needed.

“Being given the opportunity to serve as a Senate page in Washington D.C. has been an experience I will remember for the rest of my life.” says Stimpson, “I am so thankful to Senator Shelby and his staff for allowing me to represent them in the Page Program for the 2018 fall semester.”

Stimpson applied for the opportunity through Alabama Senator Richard Shelby’s office. Though he doesn’t plan to go into politics, he says he is “grateful for this experience that gave him the opportunity to learn legislative functions of the government as well as the chance to make connections with like-minded peers from every corner of the country.”

“Benjamin Stimpson was an outstanding representative of both Mobile and the entire state of Alabama during his time in the U.S. Senate Page Program,” says Senator Shelby. “His ability to excel in the highly rigorous and competitive academic program indicates he has a bright future ahead. It is always an honor to give hard-working, driven students like Benjamin the opportunity to further their studies and gain professional experience here in Washington.”

Stimpson’s work did not end when he left D.C., since coming back to campus, Stimpson has been assisting in the Development Office until the term ends.

“Since Ben’s return from the internship program in Washington DC, he has been extremely helpful to the Development Office,” says Dr. Samantha Church Development Director.  From cataloging and organizing thousands of dollars’ worth of ASMS apparel, to assembling thank you cards to every Alabama legislator and senator, his assistance has been immeasurable.”
