ASMS Alum Helps Lead Independent Review of Major AI Research Claim

Ryan Williams, ASMS Class of 1997, working with other experts on an independent examination of a claimed refutation of ETH.

ASMS alumnus Ryan Williams (Class of ’97), now a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is playing a leading role in an independent examination of recent breakthroughs by Open AI.

“This work will be verified and shepherded by a group led by Russell Impagliazzo (UC San Diego), Ramamohan Paturi (UC San Diego), and Ryan Williams (MIT). All three are experts in algorithm design and complexity theory.”

Williams writes about his involvement:

“An internal model at OpenAI has produced a claimed refutation of ETH! Russell Impagliazzo, Mohan Paturi, and I have been asked to help organize an open and independent examination of this claim. We've signed no NDAs and will receive no compensation, so we are free to share our ongoing findings with the community, which we intend to do throughout the process. We've asked OpenAI to publicly release ASAP all their raw data regarding ETH, including PDFs and Lean source. We have also asked OpenAI to commit to sponsoring a conference for the benefit of the entire community affected by this work. They agreed to both. Our letter to the community invites ideas for organizing this effort and, separately, for addressing the broader questions raised by AI-generated results [...].”
