Through the ACT Like a Dragon initiative, the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science offers free standardized test prep services to students from around the state. Our goal is to improve test performance and college admissions outcomes for students who might lack access to paid prep services. Virtual instruction options are available to all Alabama sophomores and juniors. In-person options are available to students within driving distance of ASMS. Our own high-performing students take the lead on instruction, with assistance from administrators and teachers.

Results

Over the last two years, the program has received more than 900 applications and served approximately 400 students. Based on post-exam data submitted by participants, their ACT composite scores improved an average of 4 points after program completion.

Need

In 2023, the average Alabama senior’s ACT composite score was 17.73, significantly under the national average of 19.5. The University of Alabama and Auburn University, both of which attract many out-of-state students, reported incoming freshmen ACT composite scores of 26. This means that Alabama high school students are underperforming on the ACT when compared to their national peers, and they are not meeting the expectations of in-state postsecondary institutions. Standardized test prep can help close these gaps.

Participants

Any current Alabama sophomore or junior is eligible to apply for the ACT Like a Dragon program. Spots are limited. Priority will be assigned to students who would not otherwise receive test prep services and currently have an ACT composite score of 20 or under. Sessions will take place in late February and early March, with the intention of preparing students for the ALSDE’s free administration of the ACT in March.

Application

Alabama sophomores and juniors – or their parents and guardians – may apply for the program at the link below, which will remain open until January 16, 2026.
